How to Cleanse Your Crystals

Most crystals have a special crystalline structure which is believed to hold energies, thoughts, and information.

Crystals are sensitive tools that absorb energies as well as produce them.

Cleansing your crystals is important, especially when they are used for healing, as they tend to absorb any negativity you are releasing.

You should cleanse a crystal after you have used them on yourself or others for healing, when you have just purchased a new crystal, and it is also a good idea to cleanse them after someone else handles them too.

There are many methods available which you can use to cleanse your crystals and bring them back into balance.

Just like any spiritual practice, cleansing your crystals is all about intention!

Whichever method you choose, you should always focus your intention to completely clear your crystal of all negativity.

Cleansing crystals will not remove any good energies from your stones.

All you are removing are negative energies that do not belong there and allowing your crystal to work at its optimal level.

Cleansing crystals will not remove any programming or intentions you have placed inside your crystals. This is called deprogramming and is not the same thing as cleansing. I have posted another article on how to program and deprogram your crystals.

Regularly cleansing your crystals can help to restore your crystal to its natural state. This act of care also reinvigorates your own sense of purpose.

Methods to Cleanse Your Crystals

  1. Running Water

PLEASE TAKE CARE when using this method as it can damage certain crystals, such as Selenite and Kyanite.

Water is said to neutralize any negative energy stored inside the stone and return it back to the Earth. Although natural running water is best, you can also rinse your stone under a cold water tap.

Whatever your water source, ensure that your stone is completely submerged.

Then put your intention in the stone by asking the water to remove all negativity.

I have added a list of some of the most common crystals that are considered safe to cleanse in water:

    Water Safe Crystals List:

    Clear Quartz

    Amethyst

    Smoky Quartz

    Rose Quartz

    Citrine

    Tiger’s Eye

    Agate

    Snow Quartz

    Aventurine

    Red Jasper

  2. Use Other Crystals

You can also cleanse your crystal with other crystals. A small crystal can be placed on a large crystal cluster. Citrine, in particular, is excellent for cleansing other crystals. It is one of only two crystals that is automatically self-cleansing and will cleanse other crystals. The other is Kyanite.

  3. Smudging

Another method is smudging the crystal with sage, incense, sweetgrass or a stick of Palo Santo wood

Light your chosen herb or incense then blow out any flame and pass your crystal through the smoke a few times to clear it.

Carefully stub out the remaining smudging tool in the heatproof dish or if using incense transfer to an incense burner.

  4. Use a Crystal Cleanser

There are lots of different ones on the market, but my favourite is Petaltone Crystal Clear 30ml.

You just need to add a few drops to a spray bottle of water and then spray over your crystals. A large spray bottle is best (the smaller ones won't cover many areas) 300 - 500ml suggested, such as the kind used to spray plants.

You can also use this to cleanse your aura and your home too!

  5. Moonlight

At night when the Moon is full, place your crystals on a window sill that faces the Moon. If it is safe to do so and dry you could also leave them outside. Use a glass jar or bowl to cover them for extra protection if needed. The moonlight will cleanse the crystals overnight.

Remember to remove them first thing in the morning so they don’t get too much direct sunlight which can fade them over time.

  6. Energy Healing

If you are a Reiki practitioner or use any other energy healing method you can use this to cleanse your crystals whenever or wherever you are.

Simply hold your crystals and pass the healing energy through them.

  7. Sound

Sound healing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone.

This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a nice bell. It doesn’t matter what key the sound is, so long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the crystal.

This method is ideal for those who have a large number of crystals.

  8. Bury Crystals in the Earth

Another means of cleaning crystals is to bury them in the Earth. This method should NOT be used when there is iron present in the composition of the crystal as a dominant element, e.g. Hematite, Pyrite, and Tiger Iron.

Bury your crystals in the sand, garden soil, natural loam, or clay. It is preferable to bury your crystals in the Earth, so they can absorb from the Earth's resonance.

The duration can range from 1 day to several days or even months. Obviously the longer the crystal is buried, the deeper the cleansing.

If you don’t have access to the outside ground then a pot of earth or compost indoors with a house plant in it will have a living resonance.

If you do bury them outside make sure that you know if the stone is one that can take water, in case rain seeps through to where they are located, and remember, do mark where you put them so that you can find them again!

  9. Bury in Brown Rice

Another alternative is to use uncooked brown rice, this is a simple technique that will cleanse your stones.

Place your crystals inside a bowl of uncooked brown rice making sure they are completely surrounded with grains of rice so that they are "in the dark" so to speak and keep them in the rice overnight.

The rice will naturally draw out any impurities or negative energies that the crystal has absorbed over time.

In the morning remove the crystals and discard the brown rice. Do NOT consume the rice as it has been used and may be filled with negative energy, which you don’t want in your body!

Instead, you can honour the rice for its service with a simple ritual. Give thanks to the rice and simply return it to the earth for recycling. You can do this either by scattering it upon the ground, adding it to your compost heap, or burying it.

Enjoy cleansing your crystals and the new energy this brings in!
